The Kindness Diaries: Charity Edition

Recently, I watched a documentary show called The Kindness Diaries. It is about a man named Leon

Logothetis that left his job as a stockbroker to travel the world relying on nothing but his yellow vintage motorbike and the kindness of strangers. Leon has to solely rely on the people he meets along the way and if they will have enough kindness to feed him, pay for his gas and give him a place to spend the night. It is heart-wrenching to see the amount of people that Leon meets who are going through a hard time or living an extremely difficult life just to provide a meal for their families; however, it is also impeccable to see that these same people are willing to give Leon a hand due to their personal values. Throughout his journey, whenever a stranger has touched his heart with their kindness, Leon decides to give back and provide them with something that is out of their reach but will change their lives forever. When this much kindness comes his way, it is important that he does what he can to help them prosper. Leon has provided homes, education, fresh water, opportunities for better jobs and so much more to these strangers who soon became his friends and glimpse of hope that kindness still exists in a world that seems like 'a big, bad, scary place'. This show is extremely eye-opening to how far a little act of kindness or generosity can go. Ultimately, it got me thinking about the importance of charities and how much of a difference they are able to make in people's lives every day. If you think about it, charity foundations are succeeding by using this same process - relying on the kindness of people. The kindness of people to donate their time, money, hard work or anything else they have to offer. What people do not realize is how much every act of kindness affects a persons life in a positive way. It's so important that in a world that appears to be "full of war, poverty, corruption and hate" people do everything in their power to shine some light in the darkness.

Kindness in Canada According to Sector Source, there are over 170,000 charitable and non-profit organizations in Canada. In 2013, with a population of 29,188, Canada had 12, 716 volunteers, which is approximately 44% or just over 4 in 10 Canadians. Together, these volunteers have donated 1,957 hours of their time. While time is extremely important, it is also important that we donate money which will allow people to receive the help they need. The amount of money that was donated to charitable or non-profit organizations by Canadians between 2010 - 2013 increased by 14% bringing the total to $12.8 billion. (Statistics Canada) In order to survive in the world we all need to help each other. I learned that you don't have to have a lot to give a lot. By people showing their kindness and donating their time and money to charities we will be able to see the greatest part of the world and humanity. Rainbows for All Children Canada As you may already know, Alyssa & Co. Events has helped with many charity events in the past (see previous blog for details) and we plan on giving our all to help many charities in the future. We are currently teaming up with Rainbows for All Children Foundation to host a Murder Mystery Dinner Gala. Through this event we intend to raise money with the help of generous sponsors, donators and guests to help guide children through life's storm. Rainbows for All Children Canada is the largest international non-profit organization committed to helping children and teens grieve and grow after loss. The foundation puts children through a program that helps build their confidence and self-esteem, improves communication, prevents destructive behaviours and improves academic performance. Since the foundation started in 1983, they have made a difference in the lives of more than 3 million children and their families.

By raising approximately $34, 000 last year, Rainbows for All Children Canada was able to help 1,000 children. With the help of the kindness of people - the volunteering committee, the sponsors, the donators and the guests- we will be able to hold an event and raise enough money to make a difference in the lives of even more children. Let's open our hearts to kindness and help this number grow with this years event. Please sponsor, please donate and please attend the gala. A little bit of your time, money and generosity can go a long way for a grieving child. For information, tickets or sponsorship opportunities please visit: To donate to our silent auction at the event or for any further questions please e-mail: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "What I have learned is this...although life may always contain both darkness and light, ultimately, when we open our eyes to the world around us it is our choice to decide how we'll see it." ~ Leon Logothetis All the best, The Alyssa & Co.
