Tips for Planning an Eco Friendly Wedding!

In honour of Earth Day we wanted to share some simple ways that you can make your wedding more eco friendly. Events can create a lot of waste, and tend to use a large number of single use items. By making some of these sustainable swaps you can do your part to help the environment while planning the biggest event of your life!

1. Choose Green Venues

Look for LEED certified buildings, energy efficient lighting, and a focus on sustainability. Check out Steam Whistle Brewery and the Kortright Centre for Conservation.

2. Reduce Food Waste

Opt for a plated meal rather than a buffet to reduce leftover food that is thrown out, or arrange to have your leftovers donated to a shelter.

3. Reduce Printed Items

Rather than printing individual programs or menus, make a sign to convey this information to your guests.

4. Choose Eco Friendly Invitations

Print your invitations on recycled paper and opt for guests to RSVP via a website rather than a physical RSVP card.

5. Be Conscious of Your Floral Arrangements

Choose seasonal blooms and avoid using floral foam in your arrangements.

6. Donate Your Flowers After the Wedding

Arrange to have your flowers donated to a retirement home following the wedding so that they don’t go to waste.

7. Arrange Group Transportation

Arrange a shuttle bus for your guests to and from the hotel to cut down on individual driving.

8. Buy Pre-Owned Decor

Join Facebook Wedding groups in your area to hunt down pre-owned decor that matches your style. After your wedding, pass it along to another bride to be!

9. Choose Responsibly Sourced Rings

Look for ethically sourced diamonds or choose a lab grown diamond and save on the price as well as help the environment.

10. Avoid Favours that will be Thrown Out

Try to choose something that is edible, usable, or make a donation to charity in honour of your guests.

11. Choose Biodegradable Confetti for your Send Off

Avoid anything containing plastic, and choose something natural like dried flowers or lavender.

We hope you gained some helpful tips to make your wedding a more eco friendly event.

Remember, the goal is to make an effort and make a change, not to be perfect!
